Watervliet Elementary School fifth graders use their math skills to design parks and hiking trails last month.
Students put math skills to use designing parks, hiking trails
March 5, 2012
Students in Mrs. Hoefer's fifth-grade class
explored the world of fractions recently by blazing trails in parks they
designed themselves.
Working in small groups, the students studied the adding and subtracting
of fractions – a New York State Common Core Standards Unit – by
designing parks complete with hiking trails and scales to mark distance.
In the end students became teachers devising word problems for their
fellow students based on the park layouts. Mrs. Hoefer and the students
were assisted during the unit by student teacher Rachel Helinski.
