RPI student athletes visit elementary students; discuss sport of rowing

On Tuesday, May 2, members of the RPI Crew Team stopped by the Watervliet Elementary School to explain the sport of rowing and the practice and teamwork required.

“The boats that win races are the ones that work together the best,” RPI Crew Club member Alli Welling told the students.

In addition to discussing the balance, rhythm, power and endurance needed for rowing, the RPI scholar-athletes also and talked about what it’s like to balance sports with a busy academic college schedule. The college students said they practice for their sport about two hours a day.

The college crew team recently made a new home for itself in Watervliet, using the new boathouse at Hudson Shores Park. Club members can be seen rowing regularly on the river.

Several students acknowledged already having seen the team's boats on the water. The team invites the public to visit Hudson Shores and watch their practices.
