Board of education to interview two candidates for superintendent

The Watervliet City School District Board of Education will meet tonight, Dec. 5, to interview two internal candidates for the position of superintendent.
The board will interview Dr. Lori Caplan, principal of Watervliet Junior-Senior High School, and Ms. Kathleen Strangis, the district’s reading and Universal Pre-Kindergarten director.
The board will conduct the interviews with the assistance of a committee consisting of teachers’ union representatives from the elementary and junior-senior high schools and the district support staff union. The interviews will take place in a closed-door executive session.
Dr. Caplan and Ms. Strangis were the only two candidates to submit applications for the job. During the internal search, a third candidate, Ms. Kirsten DeMento, the district’s director of curriculum and instruction, had expressed interest in an interim position. The board, however, is currently seeking to make a permanent appointment.
Watervliet’s current superintendent, Dr. Paul J. Padalino, announced last month he would be leaving the district for the superintendent’s position in the Kingston City School District. Dr. Padalino will begin work in Kingston on Jan. 6.
Tonight’s closed-door interviews begin at 5:30 p.m. in the administrative conference room at the Watervliet Junior-Senior High School.
