Summer learning gets underway in Watervliet

Summer learning is underway in Watervliet as the first day of the K-8 ExTRA Summer Academy found students engaging in reading, math, art and physical education activities while teachers were busy learning about their summer students.

Grades 7-8 students put their teamwork and critical thinking skills to the test on the first day of Summer Academy as they worked together to solve a series of puzzles and unlock a Breakout Edu Box containing their “ticket” to the ExTRA Summer Travel Program.

During this first week, students enrolled in the summer travel program will visit the New York State Military Museum in Saratoga, Saratoga Battlefield and the Tech Valley Center for Gravity in Troy.

The grant-funded summer program focuses on increasing academic achievement by providing instruction in English language arts and math skills and combining fun enrichment activities in art, physical education and library/technology.

The ExTRA Summer Academy runs through August 11.
